Habitat, Mobility & Society
Vincent Kaufmann & Luca Pattaroni

The interdisciplinarity of the program is based on the permanent crossing of the fields of study and their different tools, but also on their particular deepening. In its case, the City, Habitat and Mobility MAS course aims to show the interest of methodologies from the social sciences of the city to develop a critical urban and territorial design. The 12 modules included in the course aim to understand the political and social conditions of urban lifestyles and mobilities patterns. in order to explore the levers of action available to professionals to support the critical emergence of renewed urban models. Each week a different theme related to the relation between the city, habitat and mobility is addressed. Together, all these topics allow participants to explore the levers of action that professionals can use to support the critical emergence of renewed urban models.

Each session begins with a presentation by one of the participants of an article on the theme of the week, followed by a discussion. This first contributory moment is followed by a presentation from the teaching team. The lectures by Luca Pattaroni, Vincent Kaufmann, Kamil Hajji, Marc-Edouard Schultheiss, Renate Albrecher, Garance Clément, Maya El Khawand, Marie Trossat and Yves Pedrazzini – on ‘Habitat and Housing’, ‘Mobility and Travel’, ‘City in the plural: a critical stance on the creative city’, ‘Habits in the organization of activities and travels of everyday life’, ‘Residential life forms’, ‘Experiencing the city: walking & the public realm’, ‘Urban Project and Global Cities’, ‘Observing/acting for migration in European cities: a socio-architectural approach’ and ‘Urbanity and Urbanism: Learning from the (not so) Global South’ – provide an opportunity to identify social science knowledge and debates related to urban and territorial design issues. Two modules are devoted to field visits, including the Quartier des Grottes in Geneva.
