CARCERI D'INVENZIONE: Between via Ostiense and via Appia AnticaSpyridon Karakostas, Jo Schmiz, and Bartosz Wojcik

Allegoria dell’apprendimento, which translates to “allegory of learning” is a symbolic representation of a process of learning or gaining knowledge. An allegory expresses abstract ideas through symbols, stories, or personifications. In the context of this project, it is a representation of the initial observations, notes, photographs, sketches and maps that help to understand the given territory, with a focus on vacancy and abandonment.

Our vision superposes the figures and instances depicted in both maps: The Living Garden and The Great Collage. It aims at creating a rich carpet of environments crucial for creating a continuous, interconnected, democratic landscape and offers a refined mobility strategy to allow interaction and connection between the different actors and ingredients.

For the sake of a project we select nine sites, on which the topic of vacancy or abandonment takes a different form. For each site we choose a scale-reference figure, a building or public space from ancient Rome, creating a mental and geometrical possibility of a comparison. Our hypothesis is that the neglect of these areas stems more from the perception of their characteristics than from an actual lack of potential.
